Trust director Adam McKay to bring an element of dark comedy into what is otherwise a daunting film subject: the climate crisis.
The story
The film follows astronomers Kate Dibiasky (Jennifer Lawrence ) and Dr. Randall Mindy (Leonardo Dicaprio) on a media tour as they try to warn politicians and the world about a previously unknown comet that is on its way to collide with the Earth and likely cause a planet-wide mass extinction. The reaction: not interested, too busy numbing ourselves out with other trivial issues. A stellar cast ( Dicaprio, Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Cate Blanchett, Jonah Hill, Tyler Perry to name a few ) carries this satire on its shoulder with bravado and delivers the ultimate call to action.
Why watch it
Adam McKay, an openly passionate climate advocate has been wanting to make a film on the subject for years, but knew it would be a hard sell. So he did what he does best: a brilliant dramedy ( he is also the mastermind behind movies ‘The Big Short’ and ‘Vice’). Funny, dark, disturbing, this is one of the best films on our environmental crisis. ‘Dont Look Up ‘ manages the feast of being an entertaining analogy of modern day culture and our inability to hear, listen and take action based on scientific truth. A great conversation starter and incentive to do more on our own personal level.
Don't Look Up is available to watch now on Netflix.
